An outdoor kitchen is the project that changes how a San Antonio family uses its backyard. Instead of carrying plates in and out of the house, you cook, serve and gather in one place, under shade, nine or ten months of the year. As a landscape design-build company, we plan outdoor kitchens as part of the whole yard: the patio under it, the cover over it, the lighting, the drainage and the path back to the house. These are the outdoor kitchen ideas we recommend most often to homeowners around San Antonio and the Hill Country, with photos from our own projects.

1. Start With How You Actually Cook
The best outdoor kitchen ideas begin with a simple question: what do you cook on a normal weekend? A family that smokes brisket needs room for a smoker and a place to rest meat. A family that grills fajitas for a crowd needs a long run of counter and a flat-top. Someone who mostly hosts drinks needs a bar, ice and a sink more than a second burner. We sketch the kitchen around those habits first, then pick appliances, so the layout fits the way you live instead of a showroom photo.
2. Choose a Layout That Fits the Patio
Most San Antonio outdoor kitchens fall into one of four layouts:
- Straight run (linear): one counter along a wall or patio edge. Simple, affordable and great for smaller patios.
- L-shape: adds a return for prep space or a bar top, and creates a natural corner for guests to gather.
- U-shape: the cook stands inside, with grill, prep and bar on three sides. Ideal for serious cooks and big gatherings.
- Island with bar seating: a freestanding island facing the yard or pool, so the cook is part of the conversation.
Leave at least 36 to 42 inches of clear walkway behind the cook, and keep the grill away from the main traffic path to the house or pool.
3. Shade Is Not Optional in Texas
A kitchen in full afternoon sun in August will not get used. Pair the kitchen with a solid patio cover, a pavilion or a pergola with a roof panel. A cedar ceiling with a fan keeps the cook comfortable and protects counters and appliances. If you are planning both at once, our pergola and patio cover team designs the structure and the kitchen together, so posts, beams and the vent hood all line up.

4. Pick Durable, Heat-Smart Materials
Outdoor counters take heat, UV, hard water and the occasional freeze. Materials that hold up well here include:
- Stone or stucco base over a block or steel frame, matched to the house or the patio.
- Granite, quartzite or concrete counters. Light colors stay cooler to the touch than dark ones.
- Stainless steel doors and drawers rated for outdoor use.
- Pavers or concrete underfoot that can handle grease and spills. See our paver patio options.
5. Add a Fire Feature for Cool Evenings
San Antonio winters are mild, which makes a fire pit or fireplace one of the most-used features in the yard from November through March. A fire pit a few steps from the kitchen creates a second gathering spot, so guests are not crowding the cook. Visit our outdoor kitchens and fire pits page to see more of what we build.
6. Plan Utilities Before the Pour
Gas lines, electrical for a fridge and lights, and a water line and drain for a sink should be planned before the patio slab or base goes in. Running them later means cutting into finished work. During design we mark every utility so the electrician, plumber and our crew are working from the same plan.
7. Light It for Night Cooking
Task lighting over the grill and prep area, soft lights under the bar top, and path lights back to the house make the kitchen safe and inviting after dark. Low-voltage LED fixtures are efficient and easy to control from your phone. Our outdoor lighting designs tie the kitchen into the rest of the yard.

8. Think About the Whole Backyard
An outdoor kitchen works best when it is part of a full design: a patio sized for a table, turf or lawn for the kids, planting that softens the stonework and drainage that keeps water off the slab. That is the advantage of working with a design-build team. One company designs it, builds it and stands behind it. Browse our work for more finished projects.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build an outdoor kitchen? Most projects take a few weeks once materials arrive. Larger kitchens with a new patio cover, gas and electrical take longer. We give you a day-by-day schedule before we start.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen in San Antonio? Gas, electrical and many covered structures require permits, and many HOAs require approval. We help you through both.
Can I finance an outdoor kitchen? Yes. We offer customer financing through our lending partners. See our financing page for details.
What is the best countertop for an outdoor kitchen in Texas? Granite and quartzite handle heat and sun well. Lighter colors stay cooler. We will show you samples during design.
